Hi all,
Here is the place to discuss plans and ideas for the #WeMakeEvents day of action. Current ideas proposed are:
Box protest in/around i360
Must be celebratory - Show what people miss without us
New Orleans Parade style?
i360 lighting/lasers?
Seafront action...high visibility
Engage as wide a sector as possible
I agree with Rebecca & Terri. The symbolism is strong with a static protest. If so, we'd need to factor in multiple locations to ensure better coverage and impact. Potentially commission some instructional signage so that on-lookers who want to help out the industry know what to do/how they can help i.e. writing to their local MP, being more vocal on social media platforms, etc. Definitely red. We should try to stay consistent with the movement. Should we start approaching print shops to see if we can source blank red tees in multiple sizes? Does anyone have any contacts? --- Side note If you were to go down the New Orleans Style Band (maybe I'm being too dramatic) you could stage it as though it is planned - but then pull 'the show'. Executed in the right way it could echo the loss and disappointment that everyone in our industry is feeling but also the loss that Brighton as a community will continue to feel should the organisers behind those events no longer be operating. Festivities in general, foster a sense of connection & community - perhaps this might highlight the absence of it.
I like the idea of turning the i360 into one massive red alert beacon. With multiple directional lights positioned within the donut alternating to emulate a siren. Relatively simple concept (I appreciate getting permissions would be your first battle), but it would be so visible and intrusive that you can't turn a blind eye to it.
Great ideas re signs and equipment! and completely agree with a static protest, so much easier to manage but also symbolises the industry‘s standstill.
I think for the dress code, wearing red is pretty impactful -it looked great on the pix/footage from the last event and it identifies people taking part.
Annie and I had a chat about this the other day and had a couple of thoughts.
Perhaps we could make signs (or some sort of display) with the names of all the events we have in the city throughout the year. This may be a great way to engage with the public and to encourage that connection.
Instead of just using flight cases, we could stand with our individual equipment that we use on an event for e.g. in high viz, with a radio and a road closure sign, something static would be easier to manage in terms of ensuring social distancing etc.
We’d need to think about what we would be wearing. Do we dress In the same colours or do we wear what we do on site?
Just adding my support here for the day of action and agree that a focus on the seafront is a great idea especially as there is space to keep it safe. Look forward to hearing more about it and happy to help make it happen!
